TollTracker is now live in Poland

Poland is one of the most closely monitored countries we cover — and one of the easiest to get caught out in. From today, TollTracker watches 590 fixed speed cameras, 223 average-speed sections and 152 red-light cameras across the Polish road network.

Enforcement in Poland is automatic, and it is thorough

Automatic traffic enforcement in Poland is run by CANARD, the centre that sits inside the General Inspectorate of Road Transport (GITD). It works through three kinds of device: fixed speed cameras, red-light cameras at junctions, and section control — odcinkowy pomiar prędkości, or OPP.

Poland also has one of the highest motorway limits in Europe, at 140 km/h. That feels generous right up until you leave the motorway: the limits drop sharply, the signs change often, and the enforcement does not soften.

Section control is the one that catches people out

An ordinary speed camera photographs you at a single point. Section control does not. It records you entering a stretch of road, records you again at the far end, and works out the average speed you held between the two. There is no single moment to slow down for.

That is why glancing at your speedometer tells you very little inside an OPP section. You can be under the limit every time you look and still leave the section over the average — and the first you hear about it is a letter.

That makes Poland the second-largest section-control network on our map, behind Italy and ahead of every other country we cover. If you drive Polish expressways regularly, OPP is the system you will meet most often.
