Speeding Fines in Hungary 2026 – Full Table and Penalty Points

An administrative speeding fine in Hungary runs from 50,000 to 468,000 forints (≈ 140–1,290 EUR) in 2026. Two things decide which band you land in: how far over you were, and what the speed limit was on that stretch. The same 30 km/h excess costs far more in a built-up area than on a motorway.

Here is the full table, plus what to know about penalty points and registered-keeper liability.

Fine table: speed limits up to 50 km/h

This band covers most roads inside built-up areas.

  • 15–25 km/h over: 50,000 HUF (≈ 140 EUR)
  • 25–35 km/h over: 70,000 HUF (≈ 195 EUR)
  • 35–45 km/h over: 100,000 HUF (≈ 275 EUR)
  • 45–55 km/h over: 140,000 HUF (≈ 385 EUR)
  • 55–65 km/h over: 210,000 HUF (≈ 580 EUR)
  • 65–75 km/h over: 312,000 HUF (≈ 860 EUR)
  • More than 75 km/h over: 468,000 HUF (≈ 1,290 EUR)

Fine table: speed limits between 50 and 100 km/h

This covers most main roads outside built-up areas and expressways.

  • 15–30 km/h over: 50,000 HUF (≈ 140 EUR)
  • 30–45 km/h over: 70,000 HUF (≈ 195 EUR)
  • 45–60 km/h over: 100,000 HUF (≈ 275 EUR)
  • 60–75 km/h over: 140,000 HUF (≈ 385 EUR)
  • 75–90 km/h over: 210,000 HUF (≈ 580 EUR)
  • 90–105 km/h over: 312,000 HUF (≈ 860 EUR)
  • More than 105 km/h over: 468,000 HUF (≈ 1,290 EUR)

Fine table: speed limits above 100 km/h

Typically motorways, where the limit is 130 km/h.

  • 20–35 km/h over: 50,000 HUF (≈ 140 EUR)
  • 35–50 km/h over: 70,000 HUF (≈ 195 EUR)
  • 50–65 km/h over: 100,000 HUF (≈ 275 EUR)
  • 65–80 km/h over: 140,000 HUF (≈ 385 EUR)
  • 80–95 km/h over: 210,000 HUF (≈ 580 EUR)
  • 95–110 km/h over: 312,000 HUF (≈ 860 EUR)
  • More than 110 km/h over: 468,000 HUF (≈ 1,290 EUR)

The amounts are fixed by government decree and the authority has no discretion: if the measurement is valid, the amount for that band applies. There is nothing to negotiate.

The euro figures are indicative, converted at about 363 HUF/EUR (September 2026). The fine itself is always set and paid in forints.

Penalty points

Points come on top of the fine, and they are what hurts in the long run:

  • 15–45 km/h over: 4 penalty points
  • 46–65 km/h over: 6 penalty points
  • More than 65 km/h over: 8 penalty points

At 18 points your driving licence is withdrawn for six months. Points expire after two years, so two serious incidents within a year already put you uncomfortably close.

Objective liability: the registered keeper pays

When the measurement comes from a fixed camera, the authority does not look for the driver — it bills the registered keeper of the vehicle. Nobody has to prove you were behind the wheel: the fine belongs to the car.

That is why it catches so many people out. With a company car, a family car or a car you lent to someone, the letter goes to whoever is on the registration document. If you were not driving, it is on you to name who was.

Foreign plates get the letter too

A Hungarian fine does not stop at the border. Cross-border data exchange within the EU makes the registered keeper of a foreign-plated vehicle reachable, and the letter often arrives weeks after you got home — long after you had stopped thinking about the trip.

Where are the cameras? Check before you set off

A fine table is most useful when you never end up in it. Hungary has 516 fixed speed-enforcement points, all marked on the interactive map of speed cameras in Hungary.

If the technical side interests you too — VÉDA gates, Trafibox, the new 2026 devices — we covered that separately in speed cameras and VÉDA gates in Hungary.

On the road: be told in time

A map is good before you leave; on the road you need an alert. The TollTracker app for iOS and Android warns you about fixed enforcement points well before the camera comes into view.

This is not about dodging the rules. It is about not learning where a camera was via a 468,000-forint (≈ 1,290 EUR) letter. See what the app does.
