France goes live today. We now watch 2,671 speed cameras, 572 red-light cameras and 71 average-speed sections across the French road network, from the Calais approaches down to the Mediterranean.

A network that announces itself — up to a point

France is unusually fair about its fixed radars. The law requires them to be signposted, and anyone who spends time on French roads soon learns to read the verge for that panel. It is one of the few enforcement systems in Europe that genuinely warns you before it measures you.

Then there is the radar tronçon

Section control breaks that bargain quietly. One gantry reads your plate as you enter, another reads it as you leave, and the number that counts is the average you held between them. The panel appears once, at the start. After that there is nothing to see — no box on a pole, no flash, no second reminder — sometimes for ten kilometres.

That is the gap we close. Not the instant you pass a camera, but every kilometre where your average is still being decided.

Three warnings, not one

A fixed radar needs a single alert, early enough to be useful. A section needs three, because the risk runs its whole length:

• At the entry — you are going in, and here is the average you are measured against.
• Inside — your running average has drifted over, while there is still road left to correct it.
• At the exit — you are clear of it.
