Switzerland's cantons run fixed and mobile speed cameras, red-light cameras and police laser checks. Fixed fines cover only small excesses; above them a prosecutor takes over and the penalty depends on your income. Motorways need the annual CHF 40 vignette.
Each canton runs its own fixed and mobile speed cameras and red-light cameras. Fixed fines stop at 15 km/h over in town, 20 outside towns and 25 on the motorway; anything faster goes to a prosecutor, who sets a penalty based on income. Average-speed checks run at only a few sites, the first since 2011 in the Arisdorf tunnel on the A2 near Basel.
One vignette covers the year, valid from 1 December to 31 January of the following year. Sticker or plate-linked e-vignette from via.admin.ch; driving without one costs CHF 200 plus the vignette.
50 km/h over in a 50 zone, or 80 over on the motorway, is a Raser offence punished with 1–4 years in prison. Smaller excesses above the fixed-fine bands are priced on your income.
No law requires winter tyres, but if summer tyres leave you stuck and blocking traffic you can be fined. Chains are compulsory where the round blue chains sign is up.
