Estonia's roadside camera booths and per-km/h fines.
Estonia's fixed speed cameras stand in roadside booths on main roads and in Tallinn, announced by "Automaatkontroll" signs. Outside towns the limit is 90 km/h unless a sign says more, and cars pay no tolls or vignettes.
Fixed lidar cameras sit in roadside booths and fire a red flash. Each one sends its own letter, €7 for every km/h over, up to €420, so a row of cameras means a row of letters. Police also run mobile cameras, and red-light offences are recorded automatically. Estonia has no average-speed sections.
Some main roads are signed 100–120 km/h, many only in summer. Elsewhere outside towns the limit is 90, so watch where a faster section ends.
In cold winters official ice roads open over the sea and lakes: daylight only, no stopping or overtaking, and seatbelts off so you can get out fast.
Cars and vans up to 3.5 t pay no tolls or vignettes. Lorries over 3.5 t buy a time-based road charge.
