The old town of Heidelberg is still a very large pedestrian zone.
The centre of the Bahnstadt district has been car-free since 6 March 2023; bollards control access.
Why the low emission zone was lifted
Since April 2019, section 47 of the Federal Immission Control Act has provided that driving bans are, as a rule, neither necessary nor proportionate in areas where the annual mean for nitrogen dioxide does not exceed 50 µg/m³. On that basis, 19 low emission zones have been lifted since 2020.
The former low emission zone
The zone existed from 1. ledna 2010 to 1. března 2023 and covered around 10,25 km².
