Why the low emission zone was lifted
Since April 2019, section 47 of the Federal Immission Control Act has provided that driving bans are, as a rule, neither necessary nor proportionate in areas where the annual mean for nitrogen dioxide does not exceed 50 µg/m³. On that basis, 19 low emission zones have been lifted since 2020.
The former low emission zone
The zone existed from 1 janvier 2009 to 4 juin 2024 and covered around 26,83 km².
